3/20/06: Central Kentucky Mourns & Protests
on the 3rd Anniversary of the Iraq War
|
Monday March 20th,
2006,
on the 3rd Anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the CKCPJ's Peace
Action Task Group held a rally at Lexington's Triangle Park (corner
of Main & Broadway).
'We mourned, and protested on the 3rd anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
We want to go beyond statistics. The statistics are numbing: 2,307 U.S.
dead, 16,653 U.S. wounded, over 30,000 Iraqi civilians dead, and an
unknown number of Iraqi insurgents dead. The numbers are numbing. Our
goal is to focus is to focus attention on the individuals whose lives have
been sacrificed in this unwise, unnecessary, and illegal war.
From 4:30 - 5:30
p.m. peace activists read the names of U.S. and Iraqis who have
died in the award. After the activist read the name, he or she placed a flower at the foot of a coffin covered with both U.S. and Iraqi
flags. While the names are being read, other activists, holding signs and
banners, lined the curbs on both sides of the streets that border
Triangle Park.
At 5:30 p.m. we had a brief program. Anita Dennis and Missy Comley
Beattie spoke. Dennis is the mother of Darryl Anderson, wounded Iraq
veteran who has gone to Canada rather than accept a second tour of duty in
Iraq. Beattie is the Aunt of Marine Lance Corporal Chase Comley who died
in Iraq on August 6, 2005. Beattie, Chase's father Mark Comley, and
several other families are members of Gold Star Families for Peace.

2/20/05: PeaceFair and Annual Dinner 2005
Over
150 individuals gathered on Saturday, February 26 to peruse informational
material from local activist groups, eat a fabulous dinner, enjoy
each others' company, and hear a remarkable speaker at the CKCPJ's
annual PeaceFair and Dinner. Nikki Finney, local poet, professor,
and activist, gave a rousing and dynamic talk, leaving the audience
electrified and ready to make a difference. The event was a tremendous
success - our thanks to everyone who spent so much time helping pull
it off, and especially to our speaker, Nikki Finney.
